Coping with Psoriasis
As a young woman, I feel and imagain a lot of people can relate to me in the fact it is extremely difficult to deal with psoriasis and or any skin condition.
Psorisis is a disorder that is non-contagious and very unpredictable. For those of you reading that have Psoriasis or know of someone with Psoriasis I am sure you are aware that there are many different types of psoriasis and is a disorder that varies with the seasons, stress and environment. Psoriasis is an immune system disorder, where your skin cells grow too quickly. A standard persons cells grow every 28 days whereas one with Psoriasis grows every 4 days, causing the skin to be flaky and red.
I have suffered with Psoriasis for over 20 years. When I was younger I didn't quite know what was happening to my skin but all I knew is that I was extremely itchy and it didn't look to pleasant. For 20 years I had been prescribed with nothing but sticky and smelly creams.
It was only a year ago I decided that, I should have and deserve to have treatment with a dermatologist, I say this because I always thought there were people worse off that me (which there are) and that they deserved the time more than I did, however I suffered for so long and it doesn't just affect you physically but mentally as well. Its proven that people with psoriasis are more likely to suffer with depression. The Psoriasis covering about 70% of my face prompted me to go to the doctor With something so obvious as this on my face it was hard to go unnoticed and was obvious that it was getting me down.
So for just over a year now I have been taking Methotrexate, a cytotoxic drug that slows down the growth of cells. As soon as I started this it was amazing my skin cleared up so quickly. I manage to put up with this drug for 12 months, however it came with a few cons, I felt nauseous a lot, I had no energy and was very tired all the time.
This week I saw my dermatologist and told her I couldn't cope with Methotrexate anymore my skin cleared to an extent although not enough for me to put up with these horrible side affects. We discussed that I should stop the drug, give my body a bit of a rest and I will see her again in about 6 weeks to discuss further options. Until then I wanted to share my story and I know that people out there will relate to myself so please comment if you have questions. I will continue to blog my progress, I will soon upload a few photos-I take them randomly so are not in any order and dont really show my psoriasis at its worst..
